David H. Koch Child Care Center at MIT

David H. Koch Child Care Center at MIT

Once Massachusetts Institute of Technology garnered funding to expand their early education program, they wished to enroll kids as soon as humanly possible. D. W. Arthur Associates developed a light-filled modular solution that sits playfully in its urban context. One year later, 126 more children can kiss their academic parents good day and collaborate on research projects of their own.

Modern Ridgetop Residence

Modern Ridgetop Residence

For this project, the owner, an author of a book on Modernism in Lincoln, MA wanted to restore and reinforce Modernist sensibilities to the existing and renovated spaces of her home.  Drawing inspiration from Modernist influences and the captivating views to river and bay, large new openings were created to dissolve the visual boundaries between inside and out.

Tabor Hill Residence

Tabor Hill Residence

A Mid-century Modern home was renovated and expanded to accommodate a family of five.  Originally designed for a mature couple, the modest home was transformed to provide more living space, while reinforcing Modernist principles.  In particular, the interweaving of interior and exterior spaces was enhanced through the creation of both western and eastern facing courtyards.

Boston Private Bank & Trust

Boston Private Bank & Trust

In the early 1990’s, Boston Private Bank & Trust Company emerged with a mission to provide “banking in the European tradition.”  For its flagship bank, a vacant 1920’s era Neo-Classical banking hall was selected in the heart of Boston’s financial district.  Consistent with the bank’s vision, the grand space and architectural details spoke to an era preceding the predominance of corporate banking options.  D.W. Arthur Associates was invited to design restorations and renovations of the banking hall and to transform the ancillary spaces for new operations.  Since that first project, D. W. Arthur Associates has worked with Boston Private Bank & Trust as they continue to expand and update their headquarter offices and branch banks throughout greater Boston.

Corning Children's Center

Corning Children's Center

Over a number of years, D. W. Arthur Associates has worked with Corning, Inc. on the evolution and expansion of their early education and child care programs.  After completing a master planning process and the first children’s center at their research park, this center was designed at the edge of their main campus.  This design exemplifies the “continuity of care” and “family groupings” concepts, wherein young children are provided with a more intimate set of spaces and relationships within a larger overall community.   Each “family group” comprises a discrete wing of the complex, organized around a central courtyard.  The design incorporates a community concept that exemplifies the educators’ goal for “continuity of care.”  The architecture also expresses Corning’s unique history through the use of varied glass and glazing. The master plan anticipates future growth, with the ability for the center to double the capacity with minimum disruption to the ongoing program.

Williams College Children's Center

Williams College Children's Center

Williams College desired an early education center that would forward their mission “to educate toward the capacity to explore widely and deeply, think critically, reason empirically, express clearly, and connect ideas creatively.” Through thoughtful master planning, site selection, and design, a center was developed that creates connections between the parents and staff, teachers and students, classrooms and natural surroundings, the center and the college. Beautifully sited, the new center inspires exploration and the desire to explore both within and without.
